Each electric motor will have a corresponding controller, and the characteristics and complexity of the controller will vary depending on the performance required by the motor.
The simplest controller is a switch that connects the motor and power supply, such as small household appliances or power tools. Switches can be manually operated or automatically started or stopped by relays or contactors connected to some sensors. The switch can have different selection positions, allowing the motor to be connected to the power source in different ways, which may include reducing the voltage when the motor starts, reversing operation, or selecting different speeds. Small controllers may omit overload and overcurrent protection devices, relying on external overcurrent protection circuits to avoid excessive current. Some small motors have built-in overload protection, which automatically opens in case of overload to avoid overload. Larger motors will have overload relays or temperature sensing relays added to the controller, as well as fuses or circuit breakers to prevent overcurrent. Automatic motor controllers may also include limit switches or other devices to protect machinery.
